Electron Microscopes are popularly used scientific and analytical
instruments using a beam of highly energized electrons to examine
objects. Working Principle
This special type of microscope makes use of electrons instead of light waves to create magnified images. Three dimensional figures are shown by these microscope and with much higher magnifications. The images are black & white because of the absence of light waves.
Samples to be examined or viewed must be prepared carefully so as to enable them to withstand vacuum inside the microscope. The biological specimens should be able to conduct electricity because they are illuminated with electrons. These equipment give the details of microorganisms and other minute objects.
Magnifying Process
- A stream of electrons is created and accelerated towards the specimen with the help of a positive electrical potential.
- This stream is focused and then formed into a monochromatic beam using metal apertures and magnetic lenses.
- The beam is then focused onto the sample / specimen with the help of a magnetic lens
- This interaction affects the beam and then transformed into an image, which can be clearly seen.
