There are certain cardinal rules and regulations which one has to follow while working a science laboratory or else even the slightest of carelessness can lead to major accidents. - Avoid all kinds of eatables or eating and drinking in the lab. Things like gum, cough drops etc. should not be carried in the lab, besides, useless activities like chewing hair ends or applying chapstick etc. should also be avoided by all means.
- One needs a good microbiological practice for working safely in a science laboratory. Try and handle everything including laboratory equipments and laboratory apparatus as if it is pathogenic. The soil and water samples used for culturing etc. should be handled with a standard microbiological practice under adult supervision.
- Make sure that the flame and flammable solutions are kept far apart. This can reduce the chances of a hazardous situation manifold. Try to have an open alcohol beaker far away from the flame so that some of the containing alcohol evaporates till the time the tool is brought to the flame.
- Electrical equipments should be kept far away from water making sure that the areas around electrical equipments is dry and common laboratory apparatus must be handled with care.
- A person should be equipped with lab safety equipments like fume hood, gloves, goggles etc. while working in the lab. Avoid wearing latex gloves if you are allergic to it.
- Make sure you clean the glass wear nicely before using it. The residues should be wiped clean and some water must be added before adding any liquid or solid solutes in it.
- Returning the excess material back to the stock container must be strictly avoided hence, one should be sure of the quantity of chemicals and reagents before pouring them out.
