Labeling Methods to Identify Lab Equipments

14 September 2010- There are a number of ways by which we can identify laboratory equipments. There are a wide variety of lab apparatus used for varied experiments. Depending on the subjects to be studied, the lab equipments can be classified as biology laboratory equipment, physics lab equipment, chemistry lab equipments, medical laboratory product, blood bank equipments, laboratory consumables etc. There are certain methods used to mark these equipments so that they can be easily be identified and there is no confusion by the user while using the equipment. The common method of identifying lab equipments and lab apparatus is the labeling method. The labeling should be done in a manner that it is permanent and does not damage the equipment.

There are three types of labeling methods:

Labels on the equipments

Get a label machine. Create a label as per the instructions of the manufacturers. The label should have the name of the company and serial number of the equipment, including other information like the name of the product, the manufacturing date, handling instructions etc. Place the label on the equipment in such a way that it can be easily seen or is safe. So you have to make right place location. For example, on a centrifuge, the best place to put the label is near the on/off switch. You just need to remove the paper backing on the label and place it on the equipment. Avoid certain areas if the lab equipment uses or tests corrosive material. In such a case, the equipment's back like as the back of the arm of a microscope is perfect.

Etching method of labeling

Etching is a permanent method of labeling on the lab apparatus. In this method, an etching gun or an engraver is used. Choose the appropriate place where you want to etch. The best place is usually the place on the equipment that does not come in contact with corrosive materials or does not get touched often. Use the etching device to imprint the company name, the serial number and other information on the instrument directly.

There is also the option of using a metal label where the relevant information is etched on the metal plate. The metal label can be attached to the equipment with the help of an adhesive or the label needs to be screwed into the machine, with small screws.

Hanging placards labeling

The third convenient method of labeling is just by handing a placard on the equipment. If for some reason you cannot etch on the lab equipment or you cannot label it, then you just need an index card. Write all the information and hang this card on the lab equipment with the help of a string or thread. Staple or tape string to either of the top corners of the card and hand it on the lab instrument.
