Handling Laboratory Apparatus: Glassware, Heating Device & Chemicals

08 September 2010- It is very essential to be careful while handling laboratory apparatuses. In a laboratory, there are many dangers, which can lead to disastrous consequences. So while handling certain basic apparatus, there are certain procedures to follow to reduce accidents and prevent injury. Let us check the proper ways of handling laboratory apparatus like glassware, heating device, chemicals.

Glassware

Most laboratory apparatus are made of glass, in which you actually do the testing and mixing of samples. Glassware is designed in such a way that they are used for specific experiments with properties that are unique to specific operations. As such, the glassware that should used for a particular experiment should be one which is suitable for that experiment only. For example, only glassware that is specifically designed to bear the pressure of vacuums should be used for such experiments. In this way, you are sure the glassware will maintain its integrity throughout the whole experiment.

Do not use glassware that has chips and cracks. They should be disposed off immediately. If there are any broken glasses on the floor, use a glove to pick them up and throw it in the appropriate area. Small slivers can also be swept up using a hand brush and dustpan.

Always use clean laboratory glassware. So the glassware should be kept cleaned before and after use. Wash it with soapy water, proper solution, bottle brush etc. You can also use distilled water to rinse glassware. Never keep any dirty glassware on the cupboards or shelves. There are certain glassware labeled "kimax" or "pyrex", which are safe for use with heat and flame. But otherwise most glassware will shatter if used with heat and flame. Heating Devices

Heating Devices need to be handled properly. Improper use of heating devices can result in fire and electrical hazards. Most heating devices used in laboratories are electrical devices. For example, the hot air blower is a heating device which is electrically operated. Hot air blowers are safer than bunsen burners because they provide flames of less heat. These blowers should never be used near open containers of flammable liquid. If the vapors that are emitting from the blower gets in touch with flammable liquids, it will cause an explosion.

Chemicals

If chemicals are not handled properly, accidents can occur in the laboratory. These accidents can occur while doing experiments, while storing or while disposing. There are certain hazardous chemicals like corrosives, toxins which are very dangerous. To reduce the such accidental risks, chemicals must be labeled in a proper manner and stored in dry, cool, well-ventilated areas. Chemicals that are not compatible to each other must be kept separately. For example, bases and acids should not be stored together. The corrosive chemicals should also be stored separately. They should be stored away from flammables, combustibles, and other highly reactive compounds.
