For all kinds of scientific experiments, whether in a research lab or clinical lab or laboratory in schools or colleges, there is the need of various laboratory apparatus and lab equipments. Laboratory apparatus are different tools and equipments used by scientists, researchers, students to perform their tasks. The lab apparatus differs from lab to lab, from subject to subject. The apparatus and equipments found in any given laboratory will vary depending on the field of research, nature of study and level of the researchers, like high school, or professional. The various fields of medicine and science are complex and very wide. There are certain general purpose laboratory apparatus, which are just a few of laboratory apparatus used in by scientists today. We are discussing below the common lab apparatus:
Common Lab Apparatus
Microscopes
This is the most common lab apparatus. The microscope is used to observer those compounds and specimens like plant or animal cells and bacteria, that are too small for the human eye to discern.
Bunsen Burner
Heating devises that work as little stoves in the laboratory are known as bunsen burners. These are used to provide concentrated heat to evaporate or heat certain chemicals. Gas is used to light a
bunsen burner, which is supplied by a gas line installed inside the lab.
Beakers
Beakers hold samples for later use. They can be used to store or contain a small chemical reaction. In experiments that produce a liquid product, beakers are used to catch the liquid.
Glass Lab Apparatus
The basic type of laboratory apparatus is the glassware. Laboratory apparatus like the beaker, test tubes and flasks fall under glassware lab equipment. Glass lab equipments are used for measuring, storing and observing of liquid chemicals or compounds used in an experiment. The most common glassware to store liquid is the test tube with corks or stoppers. There are glass reagent bottles, graduated beakers and flasks to measure liquids. If a liquid need to be transferred from one bottle to another, the graduated glass pipette is used. Graduated glass dropper can also be used for this purpose.
Other laboratory apparatus falling under the glassware can be used like hot plates and pans used over a lab burner. The evaporating dish, the Petri dish are, for example, circular piece of glass, used to evaporate chemicals or culture cells. The flat-bottomed Erlenmeyer flask is used for heating liquids over a burner.
Stands and Clamps
Stands and clamps are laboratory tools, used to hold and stabilize other laboratory apparatus. Test tube holder, test tube rack, the tripod are certain lab apparatus that belong to this category. A stand and clamp, stands in a stable upright position and often used with a flask glass bottom or a test tube. The tripod is often used with a burner under it.
Balance
Another common laboratory apparatus is the balance. A balance estimates the mass or weight of some object, like a dry chemical. While the traditional balances have two flat trays--one to hold the material and the other to hold weights, nowadays electronic balances are used in most laboratories.
Multimeter
For all laboratory experiments involving electricity or electronics in a laboratory, there is the need for multimeter. Multimeters can measure voltage, current and resistance, measuring alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC).
Safety Equipment
Safety equipments like eye goggles, gloves, eye-washing stations, fire extinguishers, aprons etc. are must to maintain a safety environment in a laboratory.
